How do elements of aviation and access play a vital role in the tourism industry and what can be done to influence this process? This session provided insights into the growth of Asia and opportunities to capitalise on this increase, delve into how airlines choose a destination for a new route, and explain how wholesalers work with airlines.

A highly respected and highly motivated aviation professional, Michael has twenty years of senior level experience in the aviation industry, with the last decade spent in Asia.

With an extensive commercial background, he has a proven track record in building, motivating and managing sales and marketing, distribution, network planning, revenue management and alliances teams to consistently over-deliver aggressive revenue targets in tough business environments via his strong interpersonal skills and his ability to influence across all levels. 

He is currently directing all commercial revenue strategy and activities for Hong Kong Airline’s aggressive growth in China and South East Asia and its’ future global ambitions, previously he built, led and managed strong, high performance teams in the UK, US, India and China over a 16 year career with Virgin Atlantic, with a strong focus on operational excellence, quality of service delivery and employee engagement.  

He has developed new and profitable revenue streams by successfully managing all key relationships with partners and suppliers, overcoming cross-cultural boundaries and has thus developed a keen understanding of diverse cultures and the unique challenges of doing business in a dynamic global marketplace. 

He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Transport from the University of Plymouth, UK in 1995 and has attended Harvard Business School’s Global Strategic Management program due to his acute interest in geopolitical matters and business’s place within them.

Chris Flynn is the Regional Director-Pacific for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), a position that requires liaison at the most senior levels of industry and government in an effort to support the growth of the visitor economies of the 20 nations contained within his portfolio.

After studying tourism in the United Kingdom, Chris worked with both British Airways and Qantas Airways before moving to Australia to take up a position with Ansett Australia.

With more than 30 years experience in aviation and international / domestic tourism and having operated in regions such as UK, Europe, United States, Asia and the Pacific, Chris has developed an intimate knowledge of the industry and the requirements needed to identify and explore new growth opportunities within this fast paced environment.

Julieanne Alroe was appointed to the position of CEO and Managing Director at Brisbane Airport Corporation Limited in July 2009. Julieanne also currently holds a board position at Infrastructure Australia and Urban Futures Brisbane. She is also a Member of the Council of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce QLD, is a Queensland State Advisory Council Member for the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) and is the Inaugural President of the Queensland Futures Council. 

Prior to her appointment at BAC, Julieanne developed extensive experience within the aviation industry after holding a number of roles at Sydney Airport Corporation. These roles included executive management positions in the commercial, operations, corporate affairs, and planning and infrastructure departments.

Previous board appointments include the position of chairman of Airports Coordination Australia Ltd. and Airports Council International Safety and Technical Standing Committee. She was also a Board member of Queensland Theatre Company, Australia Trade Coast Ltd. and the International Grammar School Sydney.

Julieanne has a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
