Each detailed itinerary or excursion plan is designed to excite and inspire your students. Outback Queensland covers a large area, so each itinerary focuses on a specific sub-region and highlights the best opportunities for hands-on learning and relevant fact sheets.

Stars, Stockmen and Sapphires Safari

5 days – approx. 2400 km ($130* subsidy per student)

Depart from Brisbane and travel to Mitchell, Barcaldine, Longreach and Lake Maraboon. Explore where drovers and bushrangers roamed, enjoy Outback hospitality and try your luck on the gem fields.

Outback Explorer

7 days - approx. 2500 km ($130* subsidy per student)

Depart from Brisbane and travel to Mitchell, Longreach, Winton and Barcaldine. Learn about the pioneering Australian spirit, trace the footsteps of the infamous Captain Starlight and sit around a campfire on the banks of the Thomson River.

Outback Legends and Ancient Giants

7 days – approx. 2800 km ($130* subsidy per student)

Depart Brisbane on the Spirit of the Outback train and travel via Rockhampton to Barcaldine, Winton and Longreach. Meet Outback characters, visit sheep and cattle stations, discover stories of our proud heritage and learn about Australia’s dinosaurs.

Far West Adventure

7 days – approx. 4400 km ($130 * subsidy per student)

Depart Brisbane and fly to Longreach. Travel through the Barcoo, Diamantina and Boulia regions to Mount Isa. Explore Welford National Park, hear local Aboriginal stories, sleep under the stars, climb the Big Red sandhill and learn of our pioneering heroes.

Channel Country Explorer

8 days – approx. 3600+ km ($130* subsidy per student)

Depart Brisbane and fly into Longreach. Travel through the Winton, Boulia and Barcoo regions. Meet the dinosaurs, learn the mystery of the Min Min Light, explore Diamantina National Park and climb the Windorah sand dunes.

Birdsville Desert Safari

6 days – approx. 3100+ km ($130* subsidy per student)

Depart Brisbane and fly to Birdsville. Follow the Burke and Wills Trail, visit the Dig Tree, cruise Cooper Creek, climb the Big Red sandhill and learn local aboriginal stories and culture.

South West Safari Tour

6 days – approx. 1800 km ($100* subsidy per student)

Depart from Brisbane and travel to Charleville and Cunnamulla. Stargaze at the Cosmos Centre, learn about the endangered bilby and experience life on a sheep and cattle station, with a sheep shearing demonstration.

Depart Brisbane and fly into Charleville. Travel through the Quilpie and Barcoo Shire to Longreach. Discover the wonder of the night sky, stay on a cattle station, visit a solar farm and enjoy a bush camp beside a billabong.

Corner Country Stories

6 days – approx. 3500 km ($130* subsidy per student)

Depart Brisbane and fly into Charleville. Travel to Thargomindah, Innamincka and Birdsville. Hear tales of local larrikins, see an opal cutting demonstration, spot birdlife on a Cooper Creek cruise, visit the Dig Tree and join a traditional art workshop.

Outback Adventure Tour

Depart Mackay and travel to Barcaldine, Longreach and Blackall. Go back in time and learn about Australia’s heritage, enjoy stargazing, fossick for gems and climb aboard a live mail gallop.

Lawn Hill Outback Experience

4 days – total km to depend on your departure point

Depart Burke & Wills Road House and travel to Adels Grove, Boodjamulla Lawn Hill National Park and World Heritage-Listed Riversleigh Fossil site. Enjoy hiking, swimming and canoeing, and discover fossilised remains of ancient creatures.

Australian Bushcraft, Survivor Skills and Heritage-Themed Activities

Based in Barcaldine, choose from the wide range of activities offered by the Education Centre. Discover Australia’s heritage, learn how to survive in the Outback, try your hand at archery and toast marshmallows on a campfire.

Waltzing with Dinosaurs

Based in Winton, choose to explore the dinosaur capital of Australia and home of Waltzing Matilda and Queensland's Boulder Opal. Walk in the footsteps of prehistoric creatures, learn about Outback pioneers and discover an opal mine.

Stations, Dinosaurs and Underground Treasures

Follow the paths of our droving heroes on the Overlander's Way from Townsville to Mount Isa. Discover our gold mining history and stay at a sheep and cattle station. Meet 'Hughie' the Muttaburrasaurus and join a fossil hunt to find your very own 100 million year old fossil. Feed an endangered Dunnart, fossick for gemstones and join an interactive underground mine tour.

Nature's Bounty and Outback Heroes

Discover amazing geological formations at Porcupine Gorge National Park and swim in pristine rock pools. Stand in the shade of the historic Coolabah Tree and feel the connection to the famous explorers Burke and Wills.

Ancient Fossils & Eco Discovery Tour

8 days - total km to depend on your departure point

Uncover ancient fossil deposits at the Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the richest known fossil mammal deposit in Australia, and explore Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park, one of Queensland's most significant geological parks. Excavate your very own 100 million year old fossil at Richmond and explore the geology, wildlife and plant life of Porcupine National Park.

Live and breathe Australia's stories on this wonderful journey along the Overlander's Way. Follow the ghosts of the Gold Heritage Trail, bringing our gold mining legends and characters to life. Discover dinosaur stories at Kronosaurus Korner and learn the story of the Mitakoodi people of the Cloncurry River.
