10 June 2017

Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones today announced successful Cairns tour owner-operator James Dixon as a new member of the Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) Board.

Ms Jones said Mr Dixon, managing director and founder of the award-winning Down Under Tours, would bring a wealth of experience to the TEQ Board.

“James is a well-known and passionate advocate of the Queensland tourism industry,” she said.

“With more than 27 years in the industry, he’s got all the right credentials for the role.

“His knowledge and experience will provide a valuable perspective, especially at a time when there’s great opportunity for the tourism industry in Cairns and Tropical North Queensland.”

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said Mr Dixon’s experience in Far North Queensland’s tourism industry was invaluable.

“James started Cairns-based Down Under Tours in 1990 with his brother Gordon,” Mr Pitt said.

“He has extensive experience in the tourism industry, including serving as president of the Far North Queensland Tour Operators Association.

“He’s also been a board member of the Australian Tourism Export Council and Tourism Tropical North Queensland where he was Deputy Chairman and acknowledged as an honorary life member.

“I’m looking forward to working with James to help grow tourism in the Far North.”

Mr Dixon said: “It is a great honour to be appointed and I look forward to working with the other Board members to deliver positive outcomes for the tourism and events industry.

“I know this industry is the lifeblood of many regional communities such as my own and I am committed to progressing initiatives that will make a difference and help drive future growth.”

TEQ Chair Bob East welcomed Mr Dixon’s appointment to the TEQ Board.

“I know James is incredibly passionate about our industry and we welcome his appointment at a time of strategic importance as we target growth market opportunities in a highly competitive consumer environment,” Mr East said.

“His extensive background in trade engagement and international and domestic marketing, as well as his in depth knowledge of the Tropical North Queensland operating environment, will ensure he makes a valuable contribution.”
