Chinese visitors to celebrate Year of the Sheep in Queensland

Chinese New Year festivities are underway with thousands of Chinese visitors choosing to celebrate the Year of the Sheep in Queensland.

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) Chief Executive, Leanne Coddington, said Queensland would mark the Chinese lunar event with traditional celebrations taking place across the State.

“Events such as the Cairns Chinese New Year festival begin from this week, showcasing Queensland to one of the state’s most important visitor markets,” Ms Coddington said today.

“China is Queensland’s largest international market by visitor expenditure with 309,000 Chinese visitors travelling to the state in the year to September 2014, spending $591 million on their trips.

“Up to 2800 visitors are expected to take advantage of the extra flights from mainland China and Hong Kong into Cairns and the Gold Coast this Chinese New Year period.

“In addition to regular services, the charter flights will provide a welcome boost for tourism operators and event organisers across the state after what has been a solid summer holiday period according to industry feedback.”

Ms Coddington said the annual Cairns Chinese New Year festival provided Chinese visitors with an excuse to enjoy Queensland’s warm climate and friendly hospitality in the beautiful surrounds of Tropical North Queensland.

“The event will feature colourful Chinese dragon and lion performances, parades, drumming, interactive art and cultural activities as well as food and market stalls which are sure to entertain and excite both visitors and locals,” Ms Coddington said.

“It’s supported by TEQ’s Regional Development Program, and has also been promoted as part of It’s Live! in Queensland, an initiative which highlights the perfect union of world-class events and destinations.

“Last year’s festival attracted 21,685 visitors, and organisers are anticipating another successful event in 2015.”

The Cairns Chinese New Year festival is one of many Chinese New Year celebrations rolling out across Queensland’s destinations including:
Chinese New Year Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns, 1-28 February
Chinese New Year at the Spinnaker, Capricorn Coast, 21 February
