Famous for Fun Gold Coast to shine on tourism trade mission to China

A delegation of 22 Gold Coast tourism operators are visiting China this week as part of a tourism mission aiming to create new business opportunities and grow the important market.

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) Chief Executive, Leanne Coddington, said the mission to Wuhan and Changsha, jointly led by Gold Coast Tourism and TEQ, would give attending tourism operators the opportunity to meet with more than 230 local travel trade representatives.

“China is an important market for Queensland and the Gold Coast, with the famous-for-fun destination welcoming 212,000 Chinese visitors in the year to June 2015, an increase of 13 per cent on the previous year,” Ms Coddington said.

“This mission will showcase Gold Coast tourism products and experiences to our key trade partners in central China, and offer a platform for networking, establishing relationships and developing business opportunities.

“The growth opportunities from the China market form the basis of the mission, along with building on our strong relationship with Hubei Wanda New Airline International Travel Services which support Jetstar’s nonstop, twice-weekly services from Wuhan into the Gold Coast.

“Initial reports indicate those flights are performing well, providing access for up to 35,000 additional travellers to the Gold Coast and generating up to $26 million in visitor expenditure each year.”

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter praised the local tourism industry, many of whom have been keen to embrace the China opportunity.

“In the same week that 22 tourism operators visit China, another 20 industry professionals were on the Gold Coast learning about the Chinese culture in a two-week program aimed at creating a new generation of passionate customer service advocates for our destination.”

“Visitor numbers from China to the Gold Coast have doubled in five years,” Martin explained.

“Achieving China’s full potential going forward will depend on the Gold Coast delivering a memorable experience and ensuring that important relationships with the Chinese travel trade are in place, making this trade mission all the more important.”

The Wuhan and Changsha tourism mission is led jointly by Gold Coast Tourism and TEQ in partnership with Hubei Wanda New Airlines and Jetstar.

Following the mission, Gold Coast Tourism and TEQ will host a weekend travel expo which thousands of locals are expected to attend and experience a taste of the Gold Coast.
