Hong Kong's badminton boost for the Gold Coast

Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones met with Hong Kong Badminton Association (HKBA) Chairman Tong Wai Lun today to discuss opportunities to encourage further participation in major events staged in Queensland.

Minister Jones said the 2017 Badminton World Federation (BWF) Sudirman Cup on the Gold Coast presented an opportunity for Hong Kong’s national team to participate in the tournament and promote Queensland to the growing Greater China visitor market.

“We want to highlight the Gold Coast as the BWF Sudirman Cup host city for 2017 and establish a relationship with the Hong Kong Badminton Association to promote this event and wider participation in sporting events in Queensland,” Ms Jones said.

“The biennial BWF Sudirman Cup is the world’s largest badminton tournament and is expected to generate more than $10 million for the Queensland economy, while promoting the Gold Coast as a premier major event and leisure destination.

“It is great timing to stage this major international tournament on the Gold Coast in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“Major events, including the Sudirman Cup, play a vital role in supporting Queensland’s tourism industry and creating jobs.”

HKBA Chairman Tong Wai Lun said he welcomed the prospect of collaborating with Queensland in promoting the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2017 – the World Mixed Team Championships as it is known – as well as the host city. Additionally, he noted the partnership could benefit HKBA’s own annual tournament – the Yonex-Sunrise Hong Kong Open – which coincidentally starts tomorrow.

“The Sudirman Cup is one of badminton’s most important events and having it hosted in Australia – Queensland to be exact – is a wonderful opportunity to expose our sport to a growing badminton market, while at the same time promoting the Gold Coast as a destination of choice,” he said.

“This proposal by Minister Jones has great potential, not just for the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2017, but also for the Hong Kong Open – for us to be able to promote that also. We look forward to working strategically with Queensland to our mutual benefit through badminton.”

The 2017 BWF Sudirman Cup will be held on the Gold Coast from 21-28 May 2017.
