International travellers spend a record $4.6 billion in Queensland

International visitors to Queensland have spent a record $4.6 billion in the past financial year, demonstrating the state’s strongest performance since the Global Financial Crisis.

New figures released by Tourism Research Australia show international visitor spending has increased by 15 per cent.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Kate Jones, said the latest International Visitor Survey revealed international visitor spending in Queensland had surged during the past financial year, increasing by 15 per cent.

“International travellers spent an additional $590 million in Queensland in the past financial year, or 15 per cent more than the year prior,” Minister Jones said.

“The growth was above the national rate of 11 per cent and amongst the highest of any state in the country.

“International visitor spending has grown by more than a third over the past decade with visitors now contributing $1.2 billion more than in 2005.

“Increases in visitor spending were recorded from the majority of Queensland’s key international markets during the financial year including China (up 43%), the US (up 21%), the UK (up 14%), New Zealand (up 6%) and Japan up (4%).

“With significant growth from Asia, visitors from eastern markets now contribute half of all visitor spending to Queensland.

Overall, 2.2 million international visitors stayed 50 million nights in Queensland during the year to June 2015, increases of eight and nine per cent respectively.

Ms Jones said the number of international travellers had increased across destinations including the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Whitsundays and Tropical North Queensland.

“Tourism and Events Queensland led a series of marketing initiatives and trade missions, in partnership with industry, to key international markets including Japan, New Zealand, the UK, US, Greater China, India, Europe, Korea and South East Asia  during the year in an effort to attract more leisure travellers to the state,” she said.

“These marketing and trade initiatives are reinforcing Queensland as an aspirational destination and converting interest into bookings.

“The Palaszczuk Government is dedicated to working with industry to build on this momentum.

“The outlook is bright following recent aviation developments including Qantas’ Tokyo-Brisbane services commencing in August and Jetstar’s new Wuhan-Gold Coast flights scheduled to begin in September.

“In addition, major events such as the Liverpool FC match against the Brisbane Roar in July and recently secured World Science Festival Australia to be staged in Brisbane in March 2016 will provide a further boost to this vital industry.”
