Queensland tourism growth continues with record spending

Queensland tourism expenditure growth has outpaced the nation as more Australians look to the state for their holidays. 

Acting Tourism Minister Leeanne Enoch today said Queensland recorded its fifth successive quarterly increase in domestic visitor expenditure to post another total spending record in the latest Tourism Research Australia data.

Ms Enoch said the continued growth of tourism reinforced the sector as one of the state’s major economic drivers.

“Domestic overnight visitor expenditure increased 3.4 per cent to a record of $14.7 billion, which continues the highs seen every quarter since September 2015,” she said.

“We experienced stronger growth than that of Australia, New South Wales and Victoria in holiday expenditure, which was up by 8.7% per cent to $6.82 billion.

“Once travellers were in Queensland, they also tended to stay longer, with holiday visitor nights reaching 36.4 million nights, an increase of 9.4 per cent.”

The Sunshine Coast ($2.06 billion up 14.4 per cent), Townsville ($845 million, up 8.3 per cent) the Southern Great Barrier Reef ($1 billion, up 7.2 per cent) and Gold Coast ($3 billion, up 6.5 per cent) led the strong outcome.

The Outback ($227,000, up 27.6 per cent), Sunshine Coast ($1.9 million, up 19.6 per cent), Whitsundays ($336,000, up 19.1 per cent), Brisbane ($1.6 million, up 18.5 percent) and Townsville ($1.1 million, up 11.2 per cent) all recorded strong growth in holiday visitors. 

Ms Enoch said many Queensland regions were performing well above the national average.

“Australian visitors are keen to enjoy our tourism experiences right across the state,” she said.

“We expect this domestic growth to continue building on Tourism and Events Queensland’s new I Know Just the Place campaign.

“This campaign features many of the diverse and unique experiences travellers are looking for along with our tourism drawcards such as the Great Barrier Reef, magical islands and amazing beaches.

Ms Enoch said hotels, resorts and other accommodation providers were already reporting strong bookings across the summer holidays.

“These increases in visitor numbers are also a reflection of the Queensland tourism industry embracing innovation and digital technology to engage more deeply in digital economy to ensure our state remains the nation’s premier holiday destination,” she said.

“The feedback being received is that accommodation providers, particularly those on the coast, are experiencing extremely positive bookings, with many ahead of this time last year.

“Trivago reports the Gold Coast is the third most searched destination in Australia, with Brisbane fourth, and online searches of Queensland destinations for this summer have increased significantly.

“Wotif has also named four Queensland locations, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns and the Whitsundays, in the top five most popular Australia regional destinations for the school holidays.”
