Queensland records double-digit tourism growth

Double-digit growth from Asia has led to the highest number of tourists ever visiting Queensland.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones announced today Queensland hosted 2.6 million international visitors in the year ended September 2016, and recorded an increase of 17 per cent in holiday travellers.

Those international visitors spent $5.2 billion - equivalent of $100 million every week - around the State over the same period.

The Premier said Queensland would continue to drive tourism growth in international markets through a new marketing campaign.

“The new Queensland tourism brand and campaign “I know just the place” will inspire many more international tourists to come to Queensland,” she said.

“We want Queensland to be the number one Australian destination for international visitors.

“This campaign showcases our incredible experiences and shows people a new side of Queensland to add to the one they already know and love.”

Ms Jones said the latest figures were driven predominately by Asian markets.

“China continues to be our biggest market by total number and expenditure and this survey we had amazing growth from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and Thailand,” she said.

“Korea had the highest growth of all markets with a staggering 37 per cent increase in visitors and 74 per cent increase in expenditure. This was in part due to Tourism and Events Queensland’s innovative and hugely successful Q-Pop campaign which led to more than 20,000 direct bookings.

“Japan also continued its resurgence with 24 per cent growth in numbers and 23 in spending while China, which is a huge part of our marketing effort, grew substantially once again with just under 40 per cent more holiday makers and 33.5 per cent total visitors who spent more than $1 billion.

“The western markets remained on a steady growth curve with solid increases from the US, UK, New Zealand, Canada, Germany and Switzerland.”

“This substantial growth again shows just how vital tourism is in Queensland."

Holiday growth was the strongest of the markers with 1.8 million international tourists coming to Queensland to relax. Holiday makers spent just under $3 billion during their stays.

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) CEO Leanne Coddington said the majority of the regions had seen strong increases once again, led by the Gold Coast, Tropical North Queensland, Brisbane and the Whitsundays.

“Many of our regions are seeing this continued growth which reflects the hard work being done in the international markets to inspire people to come to the best address on Earth,” Ms Coddington said.

“The Gold Coast, Tropical North Queensland, Brisbane and the Whitsundays had the most international tourists in history visit their destinations and the amazing experiences they have.

“Each of those destinations also had the highest expenditure on record which is great news for the operators and industry who provide the product for travellers to enjoy.”
