always loved to travel, ever since I was little. Seeing new places, being immersed in different cultures, art and music, there’s nothing like it.”\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBrisbane local, disability advocate and public speaker, Dr Beth O’Brien is passionate about understanding human behaviour and the impact of biases and representation on authentic inclusion. This passion has arisen not only through her studies doing a PhD in Social Psychology, but in big part due to her own lived experiences.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBorn with a rare form of dwarfism called diastrophic dysplasia, Beth is a full-time electric wheelchair user. Her advocacy work has focused on normalising disability and creating inclusive communities and workplaces. Beth is also the co-founder of Consultable, an organisation which works with business to remove barriers to inclusive access in order to better meet the needs of people living with disabilities. There’s probably no-one more qualified to road-test accessible experiences, particularly for travellers with mobility challenges.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESo, what’s it like to navigate travel as someone with a disability who uses an electric wheelchair? Beth reflects on a recent trip to the Gold Coast to explain what goes into planning her holidays and what she needs to have a successful getaway.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Just like anyone else, a big part of travel for me is about taking a break from work and getting away from the daily grind to refresh,” Beth explains.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“But even though I love to travel, it’s incredibly time consuming to plan a trip. So many hours, and a lot of energy are spent researching a destination, accessible places to stay, what activities or experiences will be accessible to me, and where can I eat and drink.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“So often, even with this huge effort in planning, I can still arrive at a destination and be disappointed, as things often don’t go as expected, and venues and experiences are not as accessible as I was led to believe. We both love art: the space was excellent, the access was seamless - both within the gallery and in terms of parking and navigating the outdoor area - and the exhibitions were amazing. The staff were really helpful without being fussy.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter exploring \u003Ca href=\"https://hota.com.au/\"\u003EHOTA’s\u003C/a\u003E Archie 100, which celebrates 100 years of Australia’s oldest and most-loved portrait award, the Archibald Prize, Beth headed to the rooftop for a dining experience at \u003Ca href=\"https://hota.com.au/visit-and-explore/dining-and-nightlife/the-exhibitionist-bar\"\u003EThe Exhibitionist Bar\u003C/a\u003E.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“The food was incredible, and staff gave us the option of dining at an indoor or outdoor table. That meant a lot - as a person in a wheelchair I rarely get given a choice.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Gold Coast is famous for its sparkling sandy beaches and coastal pathways that border them, and another highlight for Beth was spending her mornings just like the locals – by the beach.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“We stayed at ULTIQA Signature in Broadbeach, so we had great access to the foreshore pathway which was easy to navigate in my wheelchair.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“As a person living with a disability, universal design – being able to enjoy a space in the same way that everybody else is – is so meaningful and so important. I’m a big plant nerd, so experiences with flora and fauna really appeal to me. It was fun to play tourist at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and we loved our close encounters with the native animals, like kangaroos and emus. We even got to see a Tasmanian devil.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“I was able to access everywhere I wanted to go, though my favourite section was exploring the boardwalks through the rainforest canopy. So many people and businesses won’t take the first steps in making changes to be more inclusive for people with disability as they’re worried about getting it wrong. Change takes time and little changes can make a big difference.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Provide as much detail as you can about the accessibility of your venue or event and how your business is welcoming and inclusive of people with disability. Keep in mind that what suits one person with disability doesn’t necessarily suit someone else - and that’s a real challenge when it comes to us finding the right information. For example, ‘wheelchair accessible’ is a very broad term, and doesn’t necessarily mean it will be suitable for all wheelchair users, so it’s better to be specific.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnd if you don’t know how best to meet someone’s needs, just ask. And ask respectfully – being fussed over or talked down to can be very awkward and unpleasant.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“For me personally, I love when I’ve booked a table at a restaurant and they’ve removed the existing dining chair before I arrive. It makes me feel welcome and it’s less awkward to not have to shuffle furniture out of the way, as I dine in my wheelchair. However, some wheelchair users will transfer from their wheelchair to a dining chair when they are seated at a table. So if you’re not sure, just ask.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Talk to your staff about how to meet the needs of people with disability…even better, engage a person with disability to come in and talk to your staff about their experiences.
