don't do Dreamtime stories; I paint what is around me.” says Brian “Binna” Swindley, a proud Kuku Yalanji man and the owner of Janbal Gallery in the leafy town of Mossman just outside Port Douglas.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E"I paint food from the mudflats, stories about how to hunt for crabs, and cassowary footprints. That’s what is painted on our bodies for ceremonies, so that's what I put on my art,” he adds.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThat might be so, but as soon as I walk through the tangerine doors and into the colourful womb that makes up Janbal gallery, my eyes latch onto to a triptych of suitcase-sized paintings of Yiki people. Against obsidian black canvases, these spirit people - revered for their protective powers - come with oversized anime style eyes and a Warhol shock of hair.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI simply must have one. As did his beloved mother, Shirley Swindley, who picked up a brush in 1995 and went on to become a commercial artist, soon selling some of her work to the Sheraton Mirage hotel in Port Douglas.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBinna’s parents had hoped their son would take a more conventional profession. Shirley wanted him to be an electrician; his dad fancied a trade – possibly a diesel fitter - at the local sugar mill.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAll that changed when Binna signed up for art college and fell in love with the idea of reproducing his culture on canvas.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“My paintings are more contemporary, (and are) from the rainforest and the sea. That’s where I get all my ideas from,” he says.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“I love to paint these; they’re all about how you get out hunting and gathering food. The cassowary is my totem. Credit: Tourism and Events Queensland.",":type":"teq/components/image"},"spacer_1832719348_co_481972629":{"spacerType":"whitespace","paddingSize":"xxsmall",":type":"teq/components/spacer"},"editorial_descriptio":{"text":"\u003Cp\u003EAway from his colourful canvasses, Binna also hosts art classes using three pots of acrylic paint bought from a generic art store (there’s no need to produce traditional ‘ink’ by rubbing rock against rock) and either a burnie bean or a small canvas as the catchall for inspiration.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe three colours, Binna explains, are ochre to represent the earth, red for the sun and white to show the rain.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAt this point he throws me a challenge. “So, can make the perfect aboriginal painting?”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI look to that triptych of animated faces staring back at me for inspiration. “Sure,” I nod, “But I will need your Yiki people to guide me.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cb\u003E/Ends\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cb\u003EAbout Janbal Gallery\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA 100% Indigenous owned art gallery located outside Port Douglas in the town of Mossman, and a welcome stop before or after a visit to the Mossman Gorge, Janbal Gallery is run by Brian ‘Binna’ Swindley, a proud Kuku Yalanji man who was inspired by his Uncle, a boomerang artist, to take up art. Binna attended Cairns Art College and tends to paint the things around him: his totem, food of the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Binna runs art classes in which students can use acrylic paint and sticks to create their own works. Paintings can be done on either a 10cm square canvas, a blank boomerang, or on the naturally occurring “burnie” bean (When lacquered, they make for a terrific key ring). While doing the art classes, Binna chats to his guests about a range of subjects including sharing personal accounts of growing up with the world’s oldest rainforest and Great Barrier Reef on his doorstep.
