Hore joined Quicksilver Cruises based out of Cairns & Great Barrier Reef soon after graduating from the University of Sydney. A zoologist and marine biologist, today he manages the organisation’s environmental division including heading up the bioresearch program for coral spawning. Russell has been diving the Great Barrier Reef for 35 years during which time he has witnessed coral spawning just three times. Trillions of eggs turn the waters around the Great Barrier Reef milky white in a soupy mix of offspring.  Each egg drifts until it lands and holds fast to a solid surface. Spawning takes place over several days with different species spawning on different nights.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n","readMoreHeight":0,"richText":true,":type":"teq/components/editorial/editorial-description"},"editorial_descriptio_1099970595":{"text":"\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb style=\"\"\u003EQ: What makes the perfect conditions for spawn?\u003C/b\u003E\u003Cbr /\u003E\r\n\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECoral spawning happens four to six nights after a full moon at a time when the ocean waters hit the perfect temperature and there is minimal tidal flow. Whereas fish get up close to each other for reproduction, coral relies on the ocean to do the courtship. The tidal flow has to be just right - not so strong that it sweeps the eggs out to sea to territories where no coral exists and where there is little access to sunlight to grow. You can still see spawning in 30 knot winds, but it’s not going to be as good (as in prime conditions). What you want is a good four to five days of nice warm, calm seas. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EYou don’t want (the reef) to produce sperm at the same time as it produces eggs, as this increases the chance of self-fertilisation. A 30-minute delay lowers the risk of genetic inbreeding, so to speak. The eggs are positively buoyant and they float to the surface so you end up with a horizontal slick of egg on the surface. It has a real pungent smell.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n","readMoreHeight":0,"richText":true,":type":"teq/components/editorial/editorial-description"},"editorial_descriptio_360901238":{"text":"\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb style=\"\"\u003EQ: How easy or hard is it to experience coral spawning?\u003C/b\u003E\u003Cbr /\u003E\r\n\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWe’ve only known about coral spawning for 35 years and very few people in the world have encountered it. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrom a biological point of view, coral spawning is a necessary process, and it is wonderful to see – it’s the Everest of seeing reproduction in nature – but you need to be in the right spot at the right time. In fact, when you narrow it down to an event that is so hit and miss and you get to see it, then it’s something you will truly remember. I’ve known people who’ve gone out on the right night, got in the water and missed it. The people on the second dive get it. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESpawning is very close to the top of the bucket list for divers as you have to be in the right place at the right time. But when it’s spawning, it’s a whole new ball game. You are essentially looking for bundles of eggs popping out of the coral. It can be quite a sight and different species reproduce differently. When a big boulder coral goes off, it releases an underwater snow storm and you get bundles floating to the surface. If you get too much spawn, visibility goes down. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn the lead up to the spawning day, the reef becomes fecund. It’s almost as if you are watching a pregnancy on a minute scale – without the cravings for ice-cream. If you get up close, you will see little orange balls of eggs pushing to the mouth of the coral. The conditions are prime for many other marine creatures and you can expect to see sea cucumbers standing on their heads – we call this going vertical - to release their eggs. Giant clams also get in on the act and release eggs and sperm into the water. Meanwhile, feather stars – which are related to sea urchins and star fish – can release up to 200,000 mature eggs via nipple-like swellings. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen spawning happens, there’s a tell-tale slick - and smell - and you’ll find most of the fish life sitting on the sea bottom with distended stomachs, looking quite sorry for themselves.  I liken it to humans stuffing themselves with Tim Tams.  The spawning is great for fish – it’s kind of like a massive Boost Juice – it’s good for their energy reserves particularly as they are going through spawning themselves.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n","readMoreHeight":0,"richText":true,":type":"teq/components/editorial/editorial-description"},"editorial_descriptio_233513163":{"text":"\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EQ: Does spawning only happen on the Great Barrier Reef?\u003C/b\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBiologically, the Great Barrier Reef is the most diverse system in the world - there are more corals here than anywhere else. And you are in the Tropical North Queensland region, so there are many other things to do here.
