It’s a place where two World Heritage areas sit side by side: the Rainforest and the Reef. The Ribbon Reefs off the coast of Port Douglas are the only place in Australia where travellers can swim with the Dwarf Minke Whale, an incredibly rare and curious creature known to meet in the vicinity for just six weeks each year.  \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E3. Home to Australia’s largest land animal, the cassowary (weighing at around 60kg, with the largest recorded at 83kg), is the wet tropics around Cairns & Great Barrier Reef. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E4. At 160km in length, the Undara Lava Tubes are one of the world’s longest lava cave systems and were formed from the molten lava from a single volcano. Located four hours’ drive from Cairns, the area around Mt Surprise is rich with craters, lava tubes, gem fields and hot springs. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E5. The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area boasts Australia’s greatest concentration of bird species with over 400 different species recorded in the region. Thirteen of these are endemic. The title of Australia’s wettest town is a battle between Tully and Babinda with an average annual rainfall exceeding 4,000 mm. Both are near the Tully and South Johnstone rivers, making this one of the best white-water rafting destinations in the country. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E8. The first recorded European sighting of a kangaroo was at Cooktown by botanists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander when they arrived in the region with Lt James Cook in 1770. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E9. Laura on Cape York Peninsula has been rated by UNESCO as one of the top ten rock art galleries in the world. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E12. The 32km Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island is one of the world’s most renowned wilderness walks \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E13. The Cod Hole is one of the best-known dive sites in the world - a place where you can hand feed giant Potato Cod up to 30kg in weight and dive with Maori Wrasse \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E14. Clustered above Cape York, the 274 Torres Strait Islands are home to Australia’s indigenous Torres Strait Islander people, a seafaring people with their own distinct culture. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cdiv\u003E \u003C/div\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E15. The Cairns-Kuranda Railway was constructed between 1882 and 1891 and is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. Ribbon reefs only occur in the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef extending from Cooktown to eastern Torres Strait, a distance of 670 km. The Great Barrier Reef is home to the world’s fastest fish.
