are 20 kilometres from the Coral Sea as the crow flies, but the Daintree River has already drifted 120km to get to the freshwater point where our 12-seater vessel is tethered. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESerpentine is the best way to describe the Daintree River, a frontier waterway one hour’s drive north of Port Douglas. Here is a wondrous ark of nature home to all manner of creatures including the giant saltwater crocodile that we may or may not see. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWe are here for a two-hour bird cruise with Daintree Boatman owner Murray Hunt, a self-confessed “bird nerd” who claims to have suffered a “25-year illness caused by birds, birding and bird vacations.” Our targets - through the sharp lens of a German-made set of binoculars – are the Papuan Frogmouth, the Great Billed Heron and the Little Kingfisher. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMurray’s credentials are whispered around the globe by my fellow twitchers, one of whom is lightning quick to name the Leaden Fly Catcher as it darts by. That signals game on. Being the first to both spot and identify a bird species gets more respect than beating The Chaser using the home TV buzzer.  \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOur birder on board is a Swiss traveller celebrating his fifth outing with Murray – marvellous given this is his first and only trip to Australia and he has no plans to go anywhere else in the country. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe world’s oldest rainforest is filled with unimaginable wildlife not available in downtown Zurich and for Urst, at least, the Daintree Boatman is the anchor for a much-anticipated schedule of ‘Set. Play. Repeat’. He has a few days left to go. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMurray’s career in birding first fired up as a kid on a five-acre block in Dural, New South Wales. Since then he spent a decade as a professional guide, including five years in Kakadu in the Northern Territory, and a year with the department of conservation in New Zealand searching for the flightless parrot. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMurray chalked up no less than 16 trips with the original Boatman Tours before deciding that he liked the tour so much, he should buy the whole gig. The similarity with Victor Kiam, the 1970s American entrepreneur who was so impressed with the Remington shaver he bought the whole company, is not lost on our group. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDawn is about to break, and the boat motors to a long reach of the river where the rolling Daintree hills are mirrored to perfection in the still water. The forecast is for 30mm of rain, but this long time local promises that nothing will happen until 9.00am when we dock, which is how the climate Gods generally behave. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt soon starts to drizzle. Murray is a better birder than he is a meteorologist.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe boat stops in front of a River Cherry tree where we observe a five-metre long Amethystine Python eying a cattle egret that is stabbing at the ground near an utterly bored-looking cow. Using infra-red powers to sense the egret’s body warmth, the python slithers glacially along a broom thin branch. Once it gets within striking distance, Murray explains that the python has the capacity to unleash an almost atomic power and latch on to its prey, before coiling a muscular torso around and around in an effort to choke the bird to death. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThankfully, the egret is outside reach. Breakfast starts after the cruise and my empty stomach cannot handle a David Attenborough moment LIVE.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThrough Murray we learn that birds can have human-like characteristics. The male Magpie Geese is a bit of a hustler, and often encourages two or three girlfriends to lay their eggs in the one nest and then hang out together to watch over each other’s goslings.  Meanwhile, we are distracted by a Darta, a black cormorant known to be a keen angler with a sharp bill and a flexible neck that literally impales its catch. This bird has all the characteristics of that other historical beast, ‘Vlad the Impaler.’ \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOur final stop is Barratt Creek, a botanical wonderland of rainforest trees and mangroves, with each tree supporting some 50 different vegetation species.  It is also home to a behemoth salt water crocodile, its sheer size easily spotted on the low tide. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile we admire the old boy from a distance, Murray points out that crocodiles are “only dangerous to humans if they are at more than three metres in length,” although those numbers are growing. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Crocodiles were over harvested in 1950s and 60s. Then the government stepped in and protected them against extinction,” explains Murray. “Now there is a reasonably good population of middle-aged male crocs and it is not uncommon to find them up to four metres in length.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe reminds us that we shouldn’t be overly focused on this.
