wants to go bragging about hair plugs, right?” says marine biologist-turned tourism operator John Edmondson. The man who has been very quiet on his blossoming reef achievements.  \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“I mean, let’s face it, if you’re Elton John, you want everyone to think you’ve got a lovely head of hair and not get into the whole thing of how you did it!”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt’s an intriguing observation; not so much because this Port Douglas local and owner of \u003Ca href=\"https://www.wavelength.com.au/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EWavelength Reef Cruises\u003C/a\u003E happens to rock a thriving head of hair. More so because his business parallels the follicle hopes of \u003Ci\u003ERocketman\u003C/i\u003E with the future of the Great Barrier Reef. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOn Opal Reef, about 50 kilometres (or a 90-minute boat trip) off Port Douglas, John’s own invention, the patented \u003Ca href=\"https://www.coralnurtureprogram.org/methods\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cb\u003ECoralclip\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/a\u003E devices mimic hair plugs. Virtually impossible to spot, these unseen partners secure\u003Ci\u003E living\u003C/i\u003E coral fragments to the one-time bald spots on the reef. Their sole purpose is to encourage a return of the wild and wondrous.  \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt’s worked. Overhead, schools of 200-plus surgeon fish swarm in clouds, plummeting to graze on algae seemingly oblivious to the wide-eyed snorkelers they envelope. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAt every flip of the fin, the reef here is alive with colour and sound. Black feather stars conduct the chorus, led by a noisy rainbow of munching parrot fish, accompanied by the backbeat crackle of snapping shrimp and cacophony of whoops, grunts and chirps that vary from one fish to another. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn this Wonderland, yellow butterfly fish outshine the sun; white-tipped reef sharks swagger like Jagger; damselfish dart; turtles meander; and ‘Nemo’ clownfish wiggle. Namely, the science of coral adaptation – a field still in its infancy globally – including identification of heat-tolerant species; what to plant; when; and, importantly, where.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELuckily for John, this rests with UTS researchers. His role, along with his crew, is to deliver the ‘hard graft’ of gardening, and the wider vision of inspiring a deeper love of coral among tourists. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Ultimately, we want visitors to come out, stick their heads underwater and see beautiful coral in its natural state; for them to experience the full beauty of the reef. Because once you see it, you’ll love it and there’s a greater chance you’ll become part of its future stewardship.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhat John doesn’t readily tell you is that he initially self-funded the coral gardening project, from its inception in February 2018, to securing state and federal government funding four months later. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EToday, the Coral Nurture Program is expanding to ‘proof of concept’ phase at multiple reef sites, involving four additional tourism partners: \u003Ca href=\"https://www.oceanfree.com.au/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EOcean Free\u003C/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\"https://www.oceanfreedom.com.au/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EOcean Freedom\u003C/a\u003E; \u003Ca href=\"https://passions.com.au/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EPassions of Paradise\u003C/a\u003E; \u003Ca href=\"https://sailawayportdouglas.com/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ESailaway\u003C/a\u003E; and \u003Ca href=\"https://www.quicksilvergroup.com.au/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EQuicksilver Group\u003C/a\u003E. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“The whole rationale behind what we’re doing is that the Great Barrier Reef is so mind-bogglingly big, you have to have lots of people involved – more hands, more sites, more scale,” John says. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“It’s exciting to see coral nurseries expand to different sites with different conditions, all of which is critical to informing evidence-based research about what makes coral resilient, while at the same time protecting and enhancing high-value tourism areas.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor John and his team providing a permanent platform for reef research in tandem with day-to-day tourism operations is nothing short of a labour of love. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“It might sound corny, but the most rewarding thing is being there when people come out of the water and say it’s the best thing they’ve ever experienced,” he says. \u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“There’s huge pressure to make sure the experience lives up to their expectations. When it does, there’s no better feeling on Earth!”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n","readMoreHeight":0,"richText":true,":type":"teq/components/editorial/editorial-description"},"editorial_descriptio_1924956085":{"text":"\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003ECoralclip 101 \u003C/b\u003E \u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProudly ‘Made in Queensland’, the \u003Ca href=\"https://www.coralnurtureprogram.org/methods\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u003Cb\u003ECoralclip\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/a\u003E comprises a masonry nail and stainless steel spring clip; strong enough to anchor out-planted coral fragments to the reef substrate, minus any plastic or chemical adhesive such as concrete.   A Coralclip can be deployed in 15 seconds, and, within a month, it is camouflaged by biofilm and then coral.
