share, with the latest data today showing international tourists spent more in Queensland in 2018 than ever before.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\r\nTourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said market share grew almost one per cent in the year ended December 2018 according to International Visitor Survey Data released today.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“International visitors spent a record $5.9 billion last year which is great news for Queensland’s tourism industry and more than 200,000 workers who rely on this sector for a living,” Ms Jones said.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“These figures show that our strategic focus on high-value travellers is delivering a strong return for Queensland.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“In the last year, we’ve seen 13.3 per cent growth in international visitor expenditure – growing faster than NSW and Victoria.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“China remains Queensland’s largest international market with Chinese visitors spending more than $1.4 billion in Queensland in 2018, an all-time record and a 25.4 per cent increase from 2017.”\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\nVisitors from the United States also spent a record $414.9 million, a 15.2 per cent increase in 2018 while education and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travel also supported Queensland’s strong expenditure growth.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\nEducation visitation was up 6.5 per cent to a record 116,000 people who spent a record $1.7 billion – an increase of 32.7 per cent. VFR travel also reached records, growing five per cent to a record 720,000 visitors who spent a record $818.1 million - up 18.4 per cent.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\nBusiness travel grew 13.5 per cent to 212,000 visitors who spent $300.9 million - up 17.9 per cent.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\nMs Jones said the latest results were proof that the Palaszczuk Government’s strategy to grow Queensland’s tourism industry was working.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“Since 2014, we’ve grown Queensland’s international visitor market by nearly $2 billion – reaching $5.9 billion for the first time today,” she said.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“We restored more than $188 million cut from the tourism budget by the LNP and we’re investing more in this industry than any other government in Queensland’s history.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“Today’s data proves that our investment is already paying off.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“Queensland is known around the world for our exceptional holiday experiences whether you’re visiting the Gold Coast, Cairns or having an outback adventure.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n“Tourism is a $25 billion industry in Queensland, employing 217,000 people and the Palaszczuk Government is committed to growing this sector in the future.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n","readMoreHeight":0,"richText":true,":type":"teq/components/editorial/editorial-description"},"spacer_1679915333":{"spacerType":"line","paddingSize":"medium",":type":"teq/components/spacer"},"card_carousel":{"title":"Trending news in Queensland","type":"page","componentID":"card-carousel_1628584444","cardCount":20,"classification":"/content/dam/teq/content-fragments/public-classifications/corporate/news-and-media/trending-news","width":"12 column",":type":"teq/components/corp/card-carousel","cta":{"href":"https://teq.queensland.com/au/en/news-and-media/queensland-news","label":"explore more","target":"_self"}},"spacer_1558440557":{"spacerType":"whitespace","paddingSize":"medium",":type":"teq/components/spacer"}},":type":"wcm/foundation/components/responsivegrid"},"footer_menu":{"acknowledge":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ci\u003ETourism and Events Queensland acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country and we recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, culture and community.
