Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Resources
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will be the most significant major sporting event to take place in Australia this decade, providing Queensland with the opportunity to leverage substantial tourism value.
GC2018 will deliver important interstate and international visitation and overnight expenditure. It will also provide an enhanced global platform to showcase Queensland’s hero experiences, enhancing the awareness of Queensland as a leisure tourism and major events destination. It is estimated that GC2018 will create up to 30,000 full time equivalent jobs and inject around $2 billion into our economy.
TEQ is working to optimise the tourism value of GC2018 for Queensland across several outputs:
- Interstate and overseas visitation via sports fans and event goers and the family and friends of GC2018 Participants (i.e. athletes, officials, accredited media, workforce and volunteers).
- Overnight visitor expenditure from these visitors plus those GC2018 participants who extend their stay in Queensland pre and post the Games.
- Showcasing Queensland’s hero tourism and event experiences to enhance the awareness and perception of Queensland as a tourism and events destination. This will work to drive future visitation post Games out of our domestic and international markets including New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and India.
- Raise the profile of Queensland’s event hosting capability which will assist in the securing of more high-value events for Queensland post GC2018.
