German trade ties strengthened

01 November 2017

Relationships with the German travel trade are being strengthened as 20 ‘Aussie Specialist’ travel agents from across Germany converge on Queensland for the first time.

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) in partnership with Tourism Australia, South Australian Tourism Commission, Brisbane Marketing, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Etihad, Virgin Australia and Queensland tourism operators are hosting the group on a familiarisation tour and workshop.

Chief Executive Officer Leanne Coddington said visitation from Germany grew strongly to record highs in 2016/17, including 9.2% growth in expenditure to a record $194m.

“Germany is a significant target market for Queensland, with the adventurous, life changing experiences our state has on offer truly inspiring German travellers,” Ms Coddington said.

“European consumers in general still have a strong reliance on the trade network to book their holidays, so partnerships and regular activities such as this event are vital to the growth of those markets,” she said.

“This is the first trip to Australia for these agents and we intend to wow them with itineraries including immersion in the spectacular Great Barrier Reef, walking and discovering rainforest and wildlife, and the nightlife of Brisbane’s Southbank precinct.

“Agents have also formally met with 22 Queensland tourism operators to build relationships, exchange product and market knowledge and enhance business opportunities.

“Providing this platform for our industry to showcase Queensland’s tourism experiences is vital to growing international markets and ultimately encourage more German travellers to experience the best address on earth.

Participating travel agents representing 20 German travel companies include STA Travel, Thomas Cook Reiseburo, TUI Deutschland GmbH and many more.

The Aussie Specialist Program is Tourism Australia’s global online training program supported by all eight state and territory tourism partners designed to provide frontline travel sellers with the knowledge and skills to best sell Australia.

Brisbane Marketing Tourism and Major Events General Manager Anne-Maree Moon said Brisbane Marketing was delighted to partner with TEQ to host the workshop and a progressive dinner for the specialists in Brisbane.

“Germany is Brisbane’s fifth largest international market with 56,000 visitors making their way to the region in the year-ended June 2017,” Ms Moon said.

“We want to ensure this market continues to grow and hosting these Aussie Specialist travel agents enables us to showcase the rapid evolution of Brisbane as a leisure destination, giving us the opportunity to increase their market knowledge of the many tourism offerings here in Brisbane and our neighbouring regions.”

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Pip Close said the Tropical North Queensland itinerary would showcase nature at its best with the reef, rainforest and outback included.

“German travellers stay longer and enjoy exploring further throughout our destination making these visitors important for regional dispersal,” she said.

The agents toured Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef last week, gathered in Brisbane for the speed dating style workshop yesterday, and will take eco tours around the South East region and to Lady Elliot Island this week.
