Locals invite travellers to share their secrets

The Gold Coast is the feature of the latest promotional video to be released by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), timed to coincide with today’s Gold Coast mega ‘Be my guest’ event.

Starring dual Olympian, four-time national triathlon champion and Gold Coast local Courtney Atkinson, the 90 second video is a compelling invitation to explore ‘locals’ secret spots’.

TEQ Chief Executive Officer Leanne Coddington said the video’s release was specifically timed to leverage the Commonwealth Games.

“Courtney Atkinson is a high-profile athlete but also a proud Gold Coast local – a wonderful ambassador for our local invitation series of videos,” Ms Coddington said.

“Travellers are increasingly looking to explore the hidden secrets of a destination, and live like a local while they’re on holidays,” she said.

“And with the world’s spotlight very much on the Gold Coast as the Commonwealth Games near, TEQ has chosen to feature a world-class athlete telling his local stories and inviting travellers to explore his local area.

“Having real locals tell their story, share their secrets and invite travellers to explore their part of the world is such a genuine, Queensland way to make this series so special.

“Courtney’s passion for the Gold Coast is obvious, and his favourite spots showcase a different side to the Gold Coast than travellers might be familiar with – which is a great opportunity to encourage repeat visitation or an extended stay.”

Courtney Atkinson said it was hard not to become active growing up on the Gold Coast.

“The Gold Coast is the perfect combination of lifestyle and city,” Mr Atkinson said.

“With a backyard like this why would I want to live anywhere else?” he said.

Courtney’s local invitation video will be launched at the mega ‘Be my guest’ tourism event in Broadbeach today, which aims to help prepare Gold Coast businesses and locals be ‘Games ready’.

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter said the city was ready to welcome all guests to the largest event the region has ever seen.

“The Be My Guest GC2018 Mega Event is the culmination of a joint initiative four years in the making between the Office of Commonwealth Games, City of Gold Coast and Gold Coast Tourism to enhance the visitor experience,” Mr Winter said.

“When people come to the Commonwealth Games we want them to feel welcome and engaged with our city through receiving the best in hospitality and customer service, after all Queenslanders are known for their friendly nature,” he said.
