With the Queensland border reopening this week to New South Wales and Victoria, it's crucial for tourism and events businesses to have COVID Safe plans in place and in action, recognising that many returning visitors are emerging from recent lockdowns in their home state and expect a level of reassurance around hygiene measures, social distancing and general safety.

Consumer sentiment reports such as this one from YouGov indicates a strong proportion of Australians will look at adjusting their travel behaviours upon lifting of confinements. Many will be looking closely at health safeguards/cleanliness at their destination of choice, from always carrying hand sanitiser, and only using accommodation or airline suppliers that guarantee cleanliness/prioritise hygiene, to adjusting travel times and destinations according to seasonality or expected crowds.

This serves as a pertinent reminder that the tourism industry plays a vital role in the first-line COVID-19 response, and all businesses must ensure they allow for social distancing, comply with the relevant approved Industry Plan/s (if hosting more than 50 guests), have a Work Health and Safety Plan with COVID-19 strategies in place, collect and securely store contact information and ensure hygiene and cleaning practices are regular and thorough.
