Queensland to host FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in 2020
01 December 2019
Queensland’s iconic Coolangatta Beach will host more than 200 of the world’s best volleyball stars across a week of competition in March next year.
Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said Queensland had secured Australia’s only FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event for 2020.
“This is the best place in the world to host events,” she said.
“We’ve put other states on notice – we’re going to poach your events. Today’s announcement is just more proof that more sporting codes than ever before want to come to Queensland.”
Ms Jones said the event, formerly held at Manly Beach, would bring 630 athletes, coaches, officials, staff and volunteers to the Gold Coast.
“We’ve been in talks with Volleyball Australia to secure this event for a long time. We have a great relationship with them and they understand the value of holding their events in Queensland, where our sporting infrastructure and stunning locations make for a unique event experience,” she said.
“This event will complement a range of volleyball events we have already secured for Queensland, through a strong relationship with Volleyball Australia.”
Assistant Tourism Industry Development Minister and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said the series of volleyball events secured by the government would bring 3000 tourists to Queensland and generate more than 13,700 room nights for businesses.
“This event will be held at a crucial time of year in the lead-up to the Olympics. This means we’ll attract the world’s best athletes to the Gold Coast,” she said.
“Sports fans and athletes alike gained a new appreciation for the Gold Coast during the Commonwealth Games and Coolangatta Beach proved to be a world-class location for the beach volleyball.
“Next March will also see the return of some Aussie favourites, including Commonwealth Games silver medallists Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy who will be using the tournament to prepare for what we hope will be a golden run in Tokyo.”
Volleyball Australia CEO Andrew Dee said Coolangatta had a proven track record as a great beach volleyball venue.
“We are so excited to host the world’s best beach volleyball players on the Gold Coast’s iconic Coolangatta Beach, the location of Australia’s Gold and Silver medals at the Commonwealth Games.”
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event will take place at Coolangatta Beach from 17-22 March, 2020.
It will feature alongside the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships, the newly created Australian Beach Volleyball Schools Cup and a round of the senior Australian Beach Volleyball Tour, all to be held on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
