Amway conference to provide $50 million tourism boost to Cairns

More than 8000 Amway employees from China will travel to Cairns in 2019 for the company’s annual Leadership Seminar, an event expected to pump more than $50 million into the Tropical North Queensland economy.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones is in Beijing and has today announced Cairns has won the right to host the annual seminar, attended by Amway’s top performing salespeople.

It will be the first time Cairns has hosted the incentive event.

“Securing this seminar will be a huge boost to the tourism economy of Cairns and continues to show our commitment to growing visitor numbers from China and capitalising on the Asian traveller boom,” Ms Jones said.

“Already this year we have secured new China Southern flights connecting Cairns and Guangzhou and now we can begin preparations to host 8000 Amway delegates in Cairns.

“The delegates will get to experience Cairns as a world-class host for large scale conferences but will also immerse themselves in the best tourism experiences the region offers, led by the Great Barrier Reef and the world-heritage listed rainforest.”

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt, said there could be enormous future spin-offs from the conference.

“Once the delegates have enjoyed what our region has to offer I’m sure they’ll head home and start planning for a return visit,” Mr Pitt said.

“In addition, they’ll be telling family, friends, neighbours and colleagues at work all about the magnificent attractions on show here, and trying to convince them to visit too.

“That is why the effort and resources the State Government and industry players put into promoting our state as a venue for major events such as the Amway conference are an investment that can have long-term returns.

“It’s also why the Palaszczuk Government is investing $176 million to expand the Cairns Convention Centre to capitalise on future growth opportunities in conferences, major events and tourism.”

Ms Jones said the Amway seminar was an ideal example of combining tourism offerings with business events.

“Queensland is building a strong reputation as a business events destination, especially across Asia, because it perfectly combines world-class conference facilities with unique tourism attractions,” she said.

The Amway Leadership Seminar was secured for Cairns through a partnership between Tourism and Events Queensland, Tourism Australia, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Cairns Regional Council and Cairns Airport.

Chief sales officer for Amway Greater China Angela Keung said Cairns provided everything the company was looking for when choosing a destination for its annual seminar.

“The stunning natural beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and the rich rainforests, supported by extensive and sophisticated business tourism infrastructure, I am confident our annual seminar will help our delegates get inspired and build stronger bonds through exciting team-building ideas,” she said

Amway China holds large scale leadership seminars with a mix of business, sight-seeing and team-building to different destinations annually to reward its top achieving distributors across China.

This is the seventh time the Amway Leadership Seminar has come to Australia with the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney among previous host cities.
