Brisbane welcomes the Australian premiere of The Perfect American

15 September 2014

The Australian premiere season of The Perfect American will take the spotlight tonight at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

In a tourism and events coup for Queensland, Brisbane Festival secured the exclusive rights to produce and stage The Perfect American; the latest opera by world-renowned composer Philip Glass will delight audiences through until 20 September at the QPAC Concert Hall.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey, said the exclusive performance in Queensland would showcase the state as one of the country’s cultural capitals.

The Perfect American’s debut Australian performance is a highly anticipated event on the Brisbane Festival calendar and sure to be a strong visitor drawcard for Brisbane this Spring,” said Ms Stuckey.

“The Queensland Government’s 20-year plan, Destination Success, recognises the need to support culturally enriching events such as this to drive repeat visitation to Queensland’s destinations and provide an economic boost for the state’s tourism industry.

The Perfect American further enhances Brisbane as a premier cultural destination and fosters pride in the city’s ability to attract and host world-class productions.”

Brisbane Festival Artistic Director, Noel Staunton, said he was happy to once again partner with Tourism and Events Queensland to stage one of the year’s most anticipated cultural events.

“Brisbane Festival is grateful for the support of Tourism and Events Queensland over the past four years, without it we would not have been able to bring world-class events to our city and create incredible home-grown spectacles,” Mr Staunton said

For the first time, the QPAC Concert Hall will be converted into lyric mode in order to stage the opera.

The production involves over 120 Australian artists and over 60 arts workers headed by a major international creative team including one of the world’s most influential directors, Phelim McDermott, and Australia’s internationally acclaimed designer, Dan Potra.
