04 September 2013
Flying Cloud, owned by Howard Piggott, has taken out the inaugural Season of Sailing Cup, an initiative designed by Tourism and Events Queensland to encourage more visitors and participation at a series of sailing events throughout Queensland.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Jann Stuckey presented the Cup during the final stage of the ‘Season of Sailing’, Magnetic Island Race Week.
“Queensland’s Season of Sailing aims to raise awareness of the state’s incredible calendar of sailing events which take place from the Gold Coast to the Tropical north each year between March and September,” Ms Stuckey said.
“A new points system was introduced this year whereby the more regattas sailors compete and score in, the better chance they had of winning the inaugural Season of Sailing Cup.
“I congratulate Flying Cloud and her crew who scored an impressive 77 points over the series.”
The Queensland Season of Sailing campaign was delivered by Tourism and Events Queensland in partnership with sailing regatta organisers, regional tourism organisations and tourism operators.
Ms Stuckey said an impressive 320 entries were received to participate in the friendly competition.
“The Season of Sailing Cup has seen great success in its inaugural year, with thousands of sailing enthusiasts taking part in the featured regattas,” she said.
Queensland Season of Sailing Director Dennis Thompson said the campaign had been a tremendous success.
“The series was a great way to encourage more Australians to experience one of Queensland’s favourite pastimes and explore the State’s captivating coastline,” Mr Thompson said.
