Liverpool FC confirmed to play in Brisbane in 2015

04 February 2015

English Premier League giants, Liverpool FC, have today announced they will tour Australia in July, kicking off their campaign in Queensland against the Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.
The club’s visit to Brisbane marks the first time Liverpool FC has toured Queensland in their 123-year history.
Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) Chief Executive, Leanne Coddington, said Liverpool FC is one of the world’s greatest football institutions and securing the match further built on Brisbane’s reputation as a premier events destination.
“High-profile events such as this play an important role in enhancing Queensland’s tourism profile and TEQ is proud to support Liverpool FC’s tour,” Ms Coddington said today.
“The match will be a highlight among a fantastic sporting line up of events for Brisbane in 2015 which will be promoted as part of It’s Live! in Queensland.
“Queensland is home to three-time A-League champions the Brisbane Roar who will have the opportunity to play against one of the world’s top clubs.”
Ian Ayre, Liverpool FC Chief Executive Officer, said: "We visited Australia for the first time two years ago and the support we received from our Australian fans was incredible. Liverpool FC has over 600,000 supporters in Australia and we look forward to meeting as many of them as possible while we are in the country.
"Pre-season is an important time for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season and the matches against Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United are an exciting part of that preparation, giving our supporters a chance to see the team up close, no matter how far away from Anfield they live,” he added.
Suncorp Stadium General Manager, Alan Graham, challenged Australian football fans to turn Suncorp Stadium into another Anfield when Liverpool FC plays here in July.
“Liverpool is renowned for having among the largest number of supporters both at home in England and throughout the world where it boasts about 230 official supporter groups in 72 countries,” Mr Graham said.
“I’d encourage their loyal fans and football fans generally to come to Suncorp and watch some of the icons of the sport.
“Anfield, the home of Liverpool, and Suncorp Stadium have much in common, particularly the atmosphere created when big games are played at both.
“Let’s recreate the famous Kop for the fanatical Liverpool supporters at one of the Stadium ends and irrespective of your football allegiances, let’s all stand and sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before kick-off. Who can forget the emotion of that moment when Liverpool last toured Australia in 2013?”
“Liverpool also has one of the biggest trophy cabinets in world football having won five European Championships (the most of any English club), 18 English League titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups, and three EUFA Cups in its 123 year history.
“For the Brisbane Roar, this represents another opportunity to stride the world football stage having previously played against Liverpool’s cross town rival, Everton FC in 2010 and Scotland’s Celtic FC in 2009.”
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Liverpool FC fixture against Brisbane Roar again highlighted Brisbane’s ability to stage major sporting events.
“Following world-class events such as the Brisbane International, AFC Asian Cup and ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures, Liverpool FC’s visit will once again showcase Brisbane as an international sporting events destination,” said Cr Quirk.
“I look forward to our city welcoming an influx of Liverpool FC fans and football supporters from across Australia and international destinations as we see Liverpool stars and our Brisbane Roar heroes take to the field at Suncorp Stadium.”
Liverpool FC’s tour to Queensland is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland, Brisbane Marketing, Brisbane Airport Corporation, Suncorp Stadium, AEG Ogden and Stadiums Queensland.
