The National Rugby League “Brisbane Doubleheader” is back at Suncorp Stadium in 2017.
The blockbuster was confirmed in today’s 2017 NRL season draw and sees the Gold Coast Titans included as part of one of the showcase events of the year.
The Doubleheader will be held on Saturday 13<5b0ff6ff-93d5-418d-8031-4644e81f8b02-loop>th5b0ff6ff-93d5-418d-8031-4644e81f8b02-loop> May and will again be a feature of the NRL’s Indigenous Round. The match-ups will be the Melbourne Storm against the Gold Coast Titans, followed by the Manly Sea Eagles against the Brisbane Broncos.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said securing back-to-back NRL Premiership Brisbane Doubleheaders was another coup for Queensland following the sold out event in May.
“This is a blockbuster weekend for Brisbane with the Titans and Broncos set to draw another sell-out crowd against two of the NRL’s flagship clubs at Suncorp Stadium,” Ms Jones said.
“The Brisbane Doubleheader provides an exciting opportunity for fans from across the country to enjoy a weekend in Brisbane and two blockbuster games in Australia’s best rugby league stadium.
“The doubleheader is another great addition to Tourism and Events Queensland’s world-class major events calendar which showcases our state to a global audience and draws visitors from around Australia and the world.”
Suncorp Stadium General Manager, Alan Graham said the Doubleheader represented great value for Rugby League fans who get to see two quality NRL games for the price of one.
“We urge fans to get in early because this event will be a sellout,” he said.
Sales for the general public will open on Wednesday 14 December with early-bird prices.
A priority presale for Members of the four participating clubs will commence at 9am on Friday 9 December.
Tickets will be available through Ticketek online www.ticketek.com.au or 13 28 49.
“The timing of the event could not be better with players looking to impress their respective selectors ahead of the 2017 State of Origin series. All four clubs are laden with representative players so it promises to be a great night of entertainment.
“We couldn’t host this event without the support of Tourism and Events Queensland, Fox Sports and each of the Clubs,” Mr. Graham said.
Melbourne Storm CEO Dave Donaghy said the Storm was excited the Brisbane Double Header would feature as part of the 2017 Telstra NRL Premiership season.
“It was our intention, along with the other stakeholders, to work towards making this a regular marquee fixture on the NRL events calendar and we thank Tourism and Events Queensland, Suncorp Stadium, the NRL and Fox Sports for their support.”
“On the back of a sell-out event last season, we are excited to host the Titans in 2017. The atmosphere created at a full Suncorp Stadium is unrivalled in rugby league and we look forward to NRL fans supporting the event again.” He said.
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Chairman Scott Penn said the club was very proud to again play a home game as part of the Double Header.
“The Double Header this season was one of the premier rugby league events of the year and the exposure the Sea Eagles received for our corporate partners as part of this was enormous,’’ Mr Penn said.
“The Sea Eagles have a very large following in Queensland and we have no doubt our supporters will again turn out in force to cheer the team on at a fantastic venue like Suncorp. We look forward to packing Suncorp with maroon and white.
“There were more than 50,000 supporters at the Double Header this season, so I am sure next year’s event will be another sell-out. I encourage our supporters to purchase their tickets early for what will be another fantastic night of rugby league,” he said.
