Past champions headline nominations for 2015 Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold

23 September 2015

One of the most star-studded fields in the event’s history will line-up for the 2015 Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold on October 10 and 11.

31 years after its inception in 1984, the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold remains the ultimate challenge in Surf Life Saving as some of Australia’s best Ironmen and Ironwomen contest the 41.5km course from Coolangatta to Miami, via Broadbeach and return.

Past champions Ali Day (2012 & 2013), Courtney Hancock (2011), Brodie Moir (2012) and last year’s triple-crown winner Liz Pluimers (2013 & 2014) have all nominated for this year’s Elite Long-Course races.

“It is a tribute to the quality of the event that the best Surf Lifesaving athletes in Australia continually strive to etch their name in the folklore of surf sports and join the elite list of winners of this great race,” Surf Life Saving Australia president Graham Ford said.

The Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold festival will commence on October 10 with short-course races across a number of age divisions and team categories.

The Elite male (7:30am) and Elite female (7:40am) long-course races will lead off an exciting day of surf sports action on Sunday, October 11. It is expected the first athletes reach the finish line at Coolangatta from around 11:30am.

Coolangatta will be buzzing with a hive of back of beach activity for the public to enjoy. Gold FM will be live from location and a DJ will be providing tunes to entertain the crowd. There will also be a mobile photo booth and face-painting for the kids, creating a unique carnival atmosphere. Food and beverage stalls will be available.

This year marks the first of a three-year naming rights partnership with Australia’s largest equipment hire company Coates Hire.

“The Coolangatta Gold is the perfect fit for Coates Hire. It’s such an iconic Australian event and we are very proud and privileged to be the Naming Rights partner,” Coates Hire Chief Executive Michael Byrne said.

“Our new partnership with Surf Lifesaving Australia closely aligns to our strong focus on Safety and Community and enables us to showcase our company’s ability to provide equipment and event services in a challenging logistical environment. Multiple event sites need to be built over a broad area and then removed over a relatively short time. It’s our event team that will make this happen – let’s just say I’m looking forward to the Gold Coast turning to more of a bright orange next month.”

The Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold will be broadcast on Fox Sports to launch the second season of the highly successful Summer of Surf series, which has been shown internationally throughout North America, Europe and Asia. It helps showcase the pristine Gold Coast region around the world, a key market for the event’s major sponsor Tourism and Events Queensland.

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO, Leanne Coddington, welcomed news the country’s best endurance athletes would return to the Gold Coast’s shores for the 2015 Coolangatta Gold.

“The Coolangatta Gold is a highlight on the It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar and an event which reinforces the region’s reputation as a premier sporting event destination,” Ms Coddington said.

“Events play an important role in promoting a destination, driving visitation and fostering community pride.”

The 2015 Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold will again feature a Youth Challenge for 10 to 14 year olds, giving the next generation of surf sports champions an opportunity to compete in Australia’s most iconic surf sports race.
