World first platypus experience goes global
20 January 2015
The publicity activity has raised international awareness of the nature-based hero Experiences on offer in the Mackay Region, such as spotting the elusive platypus in Eungella National Park, seeing wallabies on the beach at Cape Hillsborough and the newly discovered activity of diving in platypus waters at Finch Hatton Gorge.
Spectacular footage of the world first platypus diving experience was filmed at Finch Hatton Gorge and distributed to media outlets across the world through TEQ’s partnership with Thomson Reuters.
As at December 2014, the activity has reached a global audience of over 11 million people, generating media exposure with a total value in excess of $3 million, as well over 100 Mackay Region stories or content pieces produced across the world and counting.
Stephen Schwer, General Manager of Mackay Tourism, said they were blown away by the amount of coverage received.
“The exposure from the engaging footage has given international recognition to the destination. I am proud of the unspoilt natural attractions in the Mackay Region and even bigger exposure in the future is likely.”
“TEQ’s partnership with Thomson Reuters provides a gateway to showcase Queensland’s unique visitor experiences to more than 170,000 journalists in more than 116 countries,” said McRoberts.
“We anticipate the international broadcast footage showcasing the unique opportunity to come face to face with Australia’s native platypus will inspire travellers from across the globe to put Mackay at the top of their travel to do list.”
The success of the platypus broadcast builds on the international exposure gained for the Mackay Region as part of the Queensland Instameet in October 2014, which saw a visit from one of Australia’s top travel Instagrammers and five Instameets throughout the Mackay region.
Spectacular images of Shoal Point, the Pioneer Valley, Blacks Beach, Eungella National Park, Cape Hillsborough National Park and Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens were shared with millions of social media followers.
