Queensland scores NRL Premiership double-header for Suncorp Stadium

27 November 2015

Queensland has secured another sporting blockbuster with the announcement of a marquee NRL premiership double-header at Suncorp Stadium in May next year.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones today confirmed the feature double-header between Melbourne Storm and Premiers the North Queensland Cowboys and the Brisbane Broncos against the Manly Sea Eagles on Saturday 14 May.

“Our very own Premiers North Queensland and their grand final opponents Brisbane against two of the NRL’s most successful clubs will draw a huge crowd to Queensland’s home of rugby league,” she said.

“The Cowboys and the Broncos will be the teams to beat in next year’s NRL competition while Melbourne and Manly will be out to avenge the near-misses of 2015.”

Ms Jones said the double-header would bring more visitors to the state.

“We expect these Premiership games to bring thousands of visitors to Queensland,” Ms Jones said.

“Major events such as these helped Brisbane’s visitation to grow to almost 6.5 million last year and inject more than $5 billion into the economy.”

Melbourne and Manly will transfer their home games to Brisbane as part of the agreement which has an option to extend through to 2018.

The sides feature a host of Queenslanders in skipper Cameron Smith, Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk, Will Chambers and Daly Cherry-Evans to line up against the Cowboys and the Broncos.

Melbourne Storm CEO Dave Donaghy said the Storm had strong ties to Queensland and a growing local membership base.

"In building this event, we recognised the wider opportunity and focused on delivering some of the best teams in the NRL,” Mr Donaghy said.

"I’d call on all Storm members and fans no matter where you are, to make a weekend of it and get behind the concept.”

Manly Sea Eagles CEO Joe Kelly said the decision to play at Suncorp Stadium was a positive one for the club on many levels.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our members, sponsors and supporters to enjoy a weekend in Brisbane that combines two blockbuster games of NRL and the Brisbane Racing Carnival,” Mr Kelly said.

Suncorp Stadium General Manager Alan Graham said he thanked the NRL and all participating clubs for their support of the doubleheader initiative.

“What started as a novel idea has become a popular fixture on the Stadium’s event schedule and it’s great that all key stakeholders have seen the benefits of such a move,” Mr Graham said.

Members of the participating clubs will be given an exclusive opportunity to pre-purchase tickets to the double-header before they go on sale to the general public.

The member presale through Ticketek will commence at 12 noon (Qld time) on Tuesday 8 December and run until Thursday 10 December. Tickets will then go on sale to the general public on Friday 11 December.
