Queensland shines on tour in South East Asia

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) will lead a delegation of 20 Queensland tourism businesses to South East Asia next week to capitalise on the growing international market.

TEQ Group Executive, Marketing, Steve McRoberts, said the ‘Queensland on Tour – South East Asia’ roadshow would see participants meet with approximately 200 travel trade representatives in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. 
“This will provide participating businesses with the opportunity to meet with South East Asian travel agents, product planners and key sales and operations staff to negotiate future business deals,” Mr McRoberts said. 
“Tourism operators from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Tropical North Queensland will be represented on the mission, including accommodation providers, retailers, theme parks, tour operators, and wildlife attractions as well as four regional tourism organisations.” 
Mr McRoberts said South East Asia represented an important international market for Queensland’s tourism industry. 
“According to the latest Tourism Research Australia data, in the year ending September 2014 Queensland welcomed 128,000 South East Asian visitors from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia,” he said. 
“The South East Asian international visitor market has strong growth potential in Queensland, forming the basis for this trade mission. 
“In recognition of this potential, in 2014, TEQ increased its marketing activities in South East Asia. 
“TEQ takes a global approach to its tourism marketing, supported by strong partnerships with Tourism Australia, Queensland regional tourism organisations and influential South East Asian travel trade, amplifying Queensland’s position as a premier tourism destination.” 
‘Queensland on Tour – South East Asia’ follows the announcement in October 2014 that leading South East Asian regional airline SilkAir will introduce its first regular Queensland service between Singapore and Cairns from May 2015. 
The three-weekly flights will result in around 20,000 additional seats into the destination annually and are worth up to $14 million in visitor expenditure to the local economy.
