24 March 2017
Queensland is set to welcome the nation’s best equestrian athletes and horses through a new partnership with Equestrian Australia.
Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones announced today Tourism and Events Queensland had secured a package of events to further develop Queensland’s equine events offering.
"This package will further enhance our offering in relation to this important events sector with the state already home to iconic events such as Magic Millions and the Birdsville Races," Ms Jones said.
"The 2017 Aquis Showjumping Classic will take place in Canungra next month and the 2017 National Interschool Championships in Toowoomba in September.
“Brisbane will host the nation’s top riders and industry professionals later this month for the 2017 Equestrian Australia Sport Achievement Awards Night, which recognises the top achievers in the sport over the past 12 months.
“Queensland has also secured the 2017 Testing Veterinary Course, which is an integral part of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Global Cleansport Program, bringing many of the nation’s top veterinary professionals to the State.”
“Not only will these events bring some of Australia’s best athletes and horses to Queensland, they will also attract thousands of spectators and enthusiasts," Ms Jones said.
“Events like these are key to growing Queensland’s diverse experience offering and reinforce the State’s position as the place to experience Australia’s best live events.”
Equestrian Australia CEO, Paula Ward, said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Tourism and Events Queensland to showcase the excitement of equestrian and provide an opportunity for newcomers to witness the power and exhilaration associated with horse sports.
“The addition of the National Interschool Championships to this year’s Queensland sporting calendar provides a fantastic opportunity for the youth of equestrian to cross borders and challenge themselves in a highly competitive environment, while the Aquis Showjumping Classic will see some of Australia’s most experienced riders converge in a beautiful part of Queensland for an entertaining a week of high class competition. Excitingly, riders from Japan, New Zealand and Ireland will be competing at Elysian Fields this year which will make for some patriotic rivalry and add to the atmosphere,” said Ms Ward.
The 2017 Equestrian Australia Sport Achievement Awards will take place on 24 March 2017 at the Brisbane Showgrounds. The 2017 Aquis Showjumping Classic will run from 21-30 April at Elysian Fields in Canungra, and the 2017 National Interschool Championships will take place in Toowoomba from 25-29 September. The 2017 Testing Veterinary Course will take place at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast on 15 July 2017.
