Season of Sailing showcases the Whitsundays
12 June 2014
A new digital campaign will promote the Whitsundays and Queensland as Australia’s premier sailing destination, delivering on the Government’s election promises and growing the tourism industry.
Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey said the Whitsundays Season of Sailing marketing campaign would display the range of sailing events and experiences on offer in the region from June to August.
“The Whitsundays is Australia’s pre-eminent sailing destination, offering a number of spectacular experiences, from regattas to live-aboard adventures, day tours, skipper yourself sailing and more,” Ms Stuckey said.
“The campaign will highlight the accessibility of these experiences to all Australians, encouraging more people to experience one of Queensland’s favourite past times and explore the destination’s 74 islands with friends and family.
“It also highlights what a strong and diverse tourism industry Queensland has and the importance of growing it after years of Labor neglect, as we promised at the election.”
The campaign follows local Whitsundays Captain, Leo Rodriguez and a crew of seven inexperienced sailors including television presenter Liz Cantor, photographer Matthew Taylor and Hamilton Island chopper pilot Nathan McClymont.
Ms Stuckey said the crew would learn to sail the waters of the Whitsundays, relax on a luxury charter, witness the region’s breathtaking scenery and magical sunsets and complete a Maxi Yacht sailing challenge.
“The documentary-style vision of the Whitsundays Season of Sailing captain and crew will be shared via social media channels and promoted by holiday deals to entice visitors,” she said.
Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited Chief Executive Officer Danial Rochford said the campaign would feature several regional regattas to lure visitors to sail and stay in the region and experience what the Whitsundays had to offer both on and off the water.
“The Whitsundays Season of Sailing campaign is a fantastic initiative, highlighting the region’s ability to cater for a range of visitor experiences, whether you’re an avid sailor, seeking a holiday on the water or keen to get caught up in the excitement of spectating a sailing regatta,” Mr Rochford said.
Regattas on the Whitsundays Season of Sailing calendar include:
• Whitsundays Reef Festival – 1-7 August 2014
• Airlie Beach Race Week, 8-15 August 2014
• Hamilton Island Race Week, 16-23 August 2014
• Shag Islet Rendezvous, 28-31 August 2014
