Host nation Australia has been given the top honour of announcing the global draw for the prestigious 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup at a special event on the Gold Coast today.

Badminton Australia today stages a special cross to Badminton World Federation (BWF) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast for the landmark moment in the countdown to the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup, which takes place on the Gold Coast from May 21-28, 2017.

Tournament Director and Badminton Australia Board Member, Loke Poh Wong said, “We are thrilled that the BWF has given us the opportunity to make the announcement of the draw. It ensures that locals receive the all-important draw details within a timeframe that allows them to purchase tickets to the rounds that interest them the most.

“It also means that we’re able to involve event ambassadors in the excitement of announcing the much-anticipated draw. Defending champions China have been eagerly awaiting the draw details to start planning their title defence. And for us, the draw is vital – early round games against the stronger badminton nations could be the kiss of death for Australia – even for some of our best players.”

In the presence of hundreds of TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup ambassadors, Badminton Australia and the BWF today announce the all-important tournament draw for the World Mixed Team Championships of Badminton.

Host nation Australia, who has entered the tougher Group 2 competition for the very first time, will go up against Singapore, the USA and Austria in their draw.  While defending champions China, will go up against upcoming Thailand and Hong Kong as they enter the competition.

This year sees the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup staged in Australia for the very first time at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, in the new sporting precinct for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

A pinnacle of the world’s second most popular sport, the week-long competition will bring together 32 of the world’s strongest badminton nations to battle it out for the 80 cm gold-plated Sudirman Cup trophy.

The 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup marks the first time the BWF has selected a non-European or Asian destination to host the globally-celebrated event since its founding in 1989.

Badminton powerhouses including China, Korea, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia will descend on the Gold Coast in May, with more than 1,500 participants from over 160 countries set to enjoy the natural beauty of the region for the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup, together with the BWF AGM.

Queensland’s Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones said the Gold Coast was the perfect location to host thousands of badminton athletes and spectators from around the world.

“With just over one year until the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, this is the perfect opportunity to showcase our world-class destination to a global audience,” she said.

“It’s a great honour to be hosting this tournament in Queensland – the first time it’s been played outside of Europe or Asia.

“The 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup will generate enormous economic and social value for Queensland and support job growth.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said less than two months after the completion of the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, the venue would be put to the test ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“The Surdirman Cup is a great test event one year out from GC2018 and also serves as a great example of the kind of world class events the city can attract,” he said.

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter said, “Today’s draw marks an exciting moment in time for the Gold Coast as the host city for the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup. No matter which country you support in the battle for the Sudirman Cup, the people of the Gold Coast will welcome all visiting teams and spectators taking part in this fantastic global sporting event.”

The biggest and most prestigious badminton tournament to ever be staged in Australia, the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, and is a major coup for the Gold Coast.

In addition to the interstate and overseas contingent the event will bring to the region, the TV broadcast of the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup will be watched by more than 500 million households globally, with TV vignettes showcasing the beaches, natural beauty and attractions of the Gold Coast.
