Queensland tourism operators go walkabout on Japan trade mission
08 September 2015
A delegation of 17 Queensland tourism businesses will tour Japan this week as part of a national trade mission aimed at growing the State’s share of Japanese visitors.
Walkabout Japan, run by Tourism Australia, will take place in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo, Japan from 8-11 September.
Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) Chief Executive, Leanne Coddington, said the visit would allow attending Queensland businesses to meet with around 300 Japanese travel trade representatives.
“This trade mission provides an ideal forum for Queensland operators to strengthen relationships with Japanese travel buyers, retail agents and reservation staff,” Ms Coddington said.
“Queensland businesses in attendance represent a number of Queensland's destinations, including Cairns and Great Barrier Reef, the Gold Coast, Whitsundays and Brisbane.
“Prior to the mission, TEQ conducted a workshop in Fukuoka where Queensland businesses provided training to 50 frontline Japanese travel agents on their tourism products and experiences.
“Initiatives such as this greatly assist our in-market partners to sell Queensland holidays to Japanese travellers.”
Ms Coddington said the trade visit was timely following Qantas commencing direct daily flights between Tokyo and Brisbane last month.
“Initial reports indicate the flights are performing well, adding a 20 per cent increase in capacity for travellers who can also access Queensland’s destinations via Jetstar’s Tokyo and Osaka services into Cairns and the Gold Coast,” she said.
“Japan is an important visitor market for Queensland with the State welcoming 153,000 Japanese visitors in the year to June 2015 who spent $307 million, a year-on-year increase of four per cent.
“This trade mission will help build on recent momentum and grow this valuable international market for Queensland.”
Ms Coddington said TEQ had maintained a presence in Japan over the past 36 years, working closely with in-market trade partners to promote Queensland holidays.
“Recent activity includes a tourism marketing campaign promoting Queensland holiday packages in the lead up to the Qantas daily flights from Tokyo, Narita to Brisbane.
“TEQ has also partnered with Tourism Australia on a new promotion which is giving Japanese travellers the opportunity to get involved in a ‘supersized selfie’ to help them share their holiday experiences Down Under.”
