When football meets fashion, Brisbane kicks a winning goal

11 January 2015

The international spotlight will once again shine on Brisbane as the city hosts two Asian entertainment giants when the AFC Asian Cup 2015 goes head to head with China’s mega popular reality television show I, Supermodel in a spectacular fusion of football and fashion.

To celebrate Victoria’s Secret Model He Sui and Chinese Fashion Icon Han Huo Huo will join forces with I, Supermodel contestants and Brisbane Roar Players Jack Hingert, George Lamadaridis and Ben Liftin to take part in a ‘Football Meets Fashion’ parade on January 11th at Queen Street Mall.

Hosted by fashion stylist Kimberly Gardner, the parade will showcase the latest sports luxe trends from top Queensland and Australian designers.

The fashion show will form part of an episode of I, Supermodel, a popular Chinese television show that attracted 60 million people during its inaugural season last year with He Sui on the judging panel.

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Leanne Coddington said thousands of fashionistas and football supporters were expected to watch on as international models and sporting stars take to the catwalk.

“Brisbane will host a total of seven Asian Cup games and an upcoming episode of reality show I, Supermodel which will be filmed live at Queen Street Mall featuring local designer attire,” Ms Coddington said.

“This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the city’s love for fashion and sports, in a parade led by international superstars.

“Australians are a passionate sporting nation and with Brisbane’s reputation as a new world city and the home ground for former A-League football champions, the city is fast becoming an influential player in the Asian market.

“Queensland is also a popular destination for many Asian holidaymakers, in particular Chinese travellers with 309,000 visiting the state in the year to September 2014.

“With a super soccer week ahead of us and six more live games at Brisbane Stadium, Brisbane is going to be buzzing with atmosphere.”

Acting Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the parade was another way Brisbane was showcasing its reputation as Australia’s New World City.

“This event demonstrates Brisbane as a great destination for tourism, fashion, business events and international sporting fixtures,” Cr Schrinner said.

”Bringing Asian Cup 2015 and I, Supermodel contestants together is a unique way to showcase Brisbane’s emergence as a fashion destination  with fantastic local designers and increasing numbers of  international brands setting up shop.

“Once again we are seeing the city promoted internationally to a potential Chinese audience of hundreds of millions of people.”

AFC Asian Cup CEO Michael Brown is urging Queenslander’s to get behind football fever and support the live games.

“This is the first time the Asian Football Cup has ever been staged in Australia. If you want to see some of the world’s best battling it out, this is the city to be in,” says Mr Brown.

The AFC Asian World Cup 2015 will be staged in Australia from 9th January - 31st January with Brisbane hosting its next game on Monday 12th January. The episode of I, Supermodel featuring Brisbane and surrounds will air on the Travel Channel in China in March.
