24 April 2014
Thousands of people from 33 countries will descend on Cairns this weekend for the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at the Smithfield Regional Park, providing another boost for the local tourism market.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jann Stuckey said the Queensland Government recognised the importance of major sporting events such as the World Cup in driving visitor numbers and providing a boost to the local economy and businesses, including cafes, restaurants and accommodation providers.
“The 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup has attracted more than 300 of the world’s best mountain bike riders to Cairns to compete in the event dubbed the ‘Rumble in the Rainforest’,” Ms Stuckey said.
“Aussie Paul van der Ploeg and Frenchman Julien Absalon are two of the internationally-recognised mountain bike champions who will compete this weekend.
“This will not only put the international spotlight on Tropical North Queensland, but will also demonstrate Queensland’s ability to host world-class sporting events ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
“The Newman Government’s 20-year plan for tourism, Destination Success, recognises that events can showcase our iconic natural experiences. This weekend’s World Cup is a fantastic way to show off our national parks.”
Member for Cairns and Assistant Minister for Tourism Gavin King said the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup 2014 was a major coup for the region and would provide an opportunity to showcase Cairns as a premier sports destination.
“The event is another boost for tourism in Cairns, off the back of a strong Easter season,” Mr King said.
“Attracting international events like this will support the Queensland Government’s goal of doubling annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.”
Cycling Australia’s General Manager - Events Steve Peterson said the World Cup series consists of Olympic Cross Country, Downhill and Cross Country Eliminator events across the elite, under 23 and junior categories.
“The 2014 World Cup has attracted first-class fields with the majority of international champions from Switzerland, France, Germany and Great Britain travelling to Cairns for the event,” Mr Peterson said.
“International superstars including Julien Absalon who has won two Olympic gold medals and the World Cup Series five times will compete against Aussies Daniel McConnell, who was runner up in the 2013 series and Paul van der Ploeg, the 2013 XCE world champion.
“Spectators are guaranteed fast-paced, world-class action when competitors take to Smithfield Regional Park’s trails expertly designed by Glen Jacobs and the World Trails crew.”
